LEAN PROTEIN

For ideal body weight & optimal growth

Fresh chicken is protein dense and an excellent source of high quality, highly digestible protein, which helps build and maintain lean muscle and keeps cats slim and trim. Chicken is a great source of valuable vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, Zinc & Selenium.

VITAMINS & MINERALS

Supports natural defences

Carrots provide B-carotene and peas are good sources of B-vitamins and minerals potassium, magnesium and iron which help keep the immune system fighting fit. These vegetables also have dietary fiber which helps maintain the gut associated immune system to create a healthy intestinal barrier.

OMEGA-3 & 6

For a healthy skin and radiant coat

Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, flaxseed plays an important role in supporting healthy skin and a shiny coat and avoiding flakes and dander. Flaxseed works to improve a variety of conditions, helping cats with allergies, arthritis, high blood pressure and reducing cholesterol.

NATURAL FIBER

For healthy digestion

Wholesome grains like brown rice, oats and barley are natural sources of fibre for digestive health and are a good source of energy. Easily digested by cats they are rich in proteins, vitamin B1, calcium, magnesium and potassium – essential for health and wellbeing.

ANTIOXIDANTS

For bladder health

Cranberries are a natural source of vitamin C and vitamin E, providing antioxidants which help protect the body from harmful free radicals and offer anti-inflammatory and cancer preventing properties. Cranberries promote bladder health.

AMINO ACIDS

Building blocks of muscles & organs

Eggs are considered to be a “complete” protein, meaning they provide the body with all the essential amino acids. It’s these amino acids that play a critical role in building lean muscles. Eggs are also rich in vitamin A, which contributes to normal bone and muscle growth and vitamin D, which helps promote tooth and bone formation and assists in the absorption of minerals.

IS MORE
PROTEIN BETTER

Protein is an essential part of your dog’s/cat’s diet. Protein provides essential amino acids which are the building blocks of all tissues, organs, enzymes and hormones.
Balanced levels of high-quality protein help promote lean muscle, proper growth and balanced mineral levels.
You can get enough of a good thing
Not enough protein can hamper your dog’s/cat’s growth and muscle development but too much protein has risks too. Excess and/or low quality proteins bring unwanted minerals like calcium and phosphorous, which can cause stress to the kidneys and lead to kidney stones.
It’s important to know that once your dog’s/cat’s amino acid requirements are met any excess is not stored as protein for later use, but metabolized and excreated. So providing excess protein above what your dog/cat needs has no benefit.
How much protein is in my dog’sfood?
To determine how much protein is in the food you choose for you dog/cat it’s important to look at the guaranteed analysis on the bag. This will show you what the protein % of the food in the bag is. This is not the same as the % of meat ingredients that you will see on some dog/cat food bags. The % meat ingredients may be much higher than the protein % as it is impacted by factors like quality of the ingredient and moisture content and is not a true reflection of the amount of protein your dog/cat is getting from the food.
Quality is more important than quantity
High quality protein provides the essential amino acids in amounts that closely match your dog’s/cat’s needs and are highly digestible to allow these amino acids to be easily absorbed and retained. Because of this your dog/cat needs less of a high quality protein to meet the essential amino acid needs.
Feeding a food with a high quality protein like Ideal Balance allows you to meet your dog’s/cat’s needs without the risks associated with excess minerals. At the moment, there is no test available to determine the health of your dog’s/cat’s kidney until a large level of damage is already done, so reducing this risk is vital.

The truth ABOUT GRAINS

Grains
We believe grains can provide valuable carbohydrates for energy, fibre for digestive health, antioxidants and essential proteins. When properly ground and cooked, grains are very digestible and their nutrients are effectively absorbed into a dog’s/cat's body. Our belief in grains is backed by more than a half century of pioneering pet food research.
Prefer Grain Free?
We believe as a caring pet parent you should choose to feed your dog/cat ingredients you are comfortable with, and recognise you may choose to avoid grains in your dog’s/cat’s food.
If you choose grain free, make sure you are still getting a complete and balanced food. Our Ideal Balance range provides perfectly balanced, grain free options with potatoes as a source of carbohydrates - high in fibre for gentle digestion, naturally gluten-free and full of energy.

SOME COMMON
MISCONCEPTIONS

Cats are carnivores and should be fed a high protein low carbohydrate diet

It’s true that cats are obligate carnivores. They have lost the ability to make certain amino acids, like taurine, vitamin A & arachidonic acid and will always convert a % of amino acids they take in into carbohydrates – this means they do need to eat a higher protein diet than dogs.

Does this mean they can only meet their nutritional needs through consuming animal protein?

They do need to eat animal protein for taurine, vitamin A & arachidonic acid, but once those needs are met they can get their energy, nutrient, amino acids from other sources. Any excess protein is not stored for later use. Cats are able to easily digest and absorb high quality, properly cooked carbohydrates from grains and other sources like potatoes.

Hill’s Ideal Balance is made from high quality, highly digestible proteins, precisely balanced to meet all your cat’s nutritional needs, without the risks associated with excess.

It’s not grains in pet food that lead to obesity; any food can cause obesity if it is overfed. In fact, foods high in protein or fat are often higher in calories, which can increase the risk of obesity as portion sizes are often very small and difficult to stick too.

It is important to use the feeding guide provided with your dog’s/cat’s food as a starting point of how much you should feed, and then monitor your dog’s/cat’s condition and adjust this amount as needed. Obesity is linked to many health risks so if you are worried you dog/cat is overweight, visit your vet for a weight assessment.

The biggest risk factor for the development of diabetes in cats is obesity. Whilst grains are not specifically a cause of obesity, overfeeding of any diet can increase the risk of obesity.
