The risks of excessive salt intake

Salt is an important component of your dog’s diet and has a crucial role to play in his well being. Salt (or sodium chloride) maintains electrolyte balance and is needed for organ function and the nervous system.

However, too much salt in your dog’s diet could put him at an increased risk of health problems such as heart disease and higher blood pressure. Also, excess salt can stimulate the progression of kidney disease. This is particularly concerning for owners of older dogs, as these dogs are often in the early stages of the disease without you even being aware of it.

Sadly many pet food brands add salt to improve their taste. And pet owners are simply unaware of the potential dangers to their pet's health.

However, since great taste can be achieved without unnecessarily high salt levels, we at Hill’s™ strictly control the salt content of our food. We know that the nutrients taken in at every meal must be precisely balanced, because too much can often be as harmful as too little.  So with Hill’s™ Science Plan™, you can be sure that your dog is getting just the right balance of nutrients without the risks associated with excess salt. And what’s more he’ll love the taste – guaranteed.
